This is a series of small still lifes, which were completed during the Covid pandemic and seemed particularly pertinent in attempting to capture our collective anxiety. This series is inspired by Dutch and Flemish ‘vanitas’ of the 16th and 17th centuries, which often expressed the transience of life and the futility of material things. The representation of the fruit and vegetables are allegorical, like human life they are perishable and ephemeral and represent the transient nature of existence.
